What's Included?
Principal and Peer Observations
The 2011-2012 pilot year is broken into four windows:
- Window 1 (September 12 – November 9): Teachers are observed by principal or Peer Observer on all 18-21 Framework Indicators (depending on ELA designation) with ratings.
- Window 2 (November 14 – January 13): Teachers are observed on Areas of Focus (including ELA as applicable) with no ratings. The intention here is to encourage teachers and observers to direct their attention on meaningful feedback conversations rather than ratings.
- Window 3 (January 17 – April 13): Teachers are observed on Areas of Focus (including ELA as applicable) with ratings by same observer as window 2. The intention here is to ensure that teachers receive ratiings from both types of observers during pilot year.
- Window 4 (April 16 – May): Principals will conduct end-of-year conversations with teachers. Peer Observers will conduct observations using the revised Framework in select classrooms and gather feedback.
Student Perception Surveys
- LEAP pilot schools will have two rounds of survey administration:
- Round 1: September 26 - October 14 (excludes ECE and K)
- Round 2: Spring 2012 (3rd-12th and ECE-2nd can opt in)
Teachers will receive their results approximately one month after survey administration and can use their survey data to reflect on their practice and make any adjustments necessary to increase results with the students in their classroom. For more on Student Perception Surveys click here.
Professionalism
Over the last two months of the year, school leaders will meet with teachers in end-of-year conversations to discuss this component of LEAP (e.g., contributions to team, school, and community), review Student Perception Surveys, and discuss Areas of Focus for next year.
Student Outcomes
The student outcomes component of LEAP is still in development and is not part of the 2011-12 pilot.
Feedback
We are using this pilot year to capture as much feedback as possible. Educator input will be used to guide improvements to LEAP prior to implementation.
